What is tidy-rpm-cache FOR LINUX?

tidy-rpm-cache

tidy-rpm-cache is a handy script that can help you save space on your computer by cleaning up those pesky update packages you've stored. If you've ever felt like your disk is getting crowded, this script might be just what you need!

How Does It Work?

This cool tidy-rpm-cache.py script works by finding and deleting old package files. It does this by checking the version info of all RPM files for the same software package. You can tell it to look in specific folders and even skip certain packages if you want!

Running the Script

To get started, you'll want to specify a directory that has your RPM package files using the --dir option. For example, if your packages are in /tmp/packages, you’d run this command:

tidy-rpm-cache.py --dir=/tmp/packages

What Happens Next?

The script will show you a list of RPM packages that it thinks are old and no longer needed. Before it goes ahead and deletes them, it'll ask for your confirmation. But if you're feeling brave and just want to clean house, you can skip the confirmation by adding the --force option.

No Special Installation Needed!

You don’t have to worry about complicated installation steps! Just run it from anywhere on your machine. However, keep in mind that you might need to run it as root to actually delete files. Here’s how you can copy the script so everyone can use it:

cd /tmp

tar xzf tidy-rpm-cache-rev*.tar.gz

cp tidy-rpm-cache/tidy-rpm-cache.py /usr/local/bin/

Your Guide: README.txt

The package comes with a file named README.txt. This file has all the documentation about how to use the script.

Command-Line Options at Your Fingertips!

If you're curious about what options are available, there's a summary at the top of the source file tidy-rpm-cache.py. You might also find it useful to check out Python's pydoc tool to see documentation in a man-style format or even create an HTML version.
