What is The Golly Game of Life Simulator FOR LINUX?

The Golly Game of Life Simulator

The Golly Game of Life Simulator is a super cool open-source project that’s being developed by Andrew Trevorrow and Tomas Rokicki. It works on different platforms, which means you can use it no matter what system you have! Isn’t that neat?

What’s the Goal?

Our main goal? We want to create a world-class Life simulator. We’re reaching out to the best Life hackers out there for ideas and help. Plus, we want to share our excitement with everyone who loves this stuff!

Key Features of The Golly Game of Life Simulator

Check out these awesome features:

  • Unbounded universe (only limited by your memory!)

  • Super fast and memory-efficient algorithms.

  • A lightning-fast hashing algorithm for those highly regular patterns.

  • Responsive performance even when generating or cleaning up.

  • Supports RLE, Life 1.05/1.06, and macrocell formats.

  • You can easily paste patterns from your clipboard!

  • An auto-fit option to keep patterns sized just right for your window.

  • A full-screen mode—no distractions like menus or scroll bars!

  • A built-in HTML help system (thanks to wxWidgets).

What’s New in This Release?

If you’re using the X11 version of Golly, watch out! There are some bugs and limitations there, so it’s better to stick with the GTK version if you can. Just so you know, it needs GTK+ 2.x.

If you're feeling adventurous and want to build Golly from source, make sure to use wxGTK 2.7 or later to avoid running into any bugs.
