TextCrawler is a handy tool that helps you search for files on your computer and removable devices, even digging into the content of those files. It's packed with lots of options, especially designed for users who like to dive deep into their searches.
Getting TextCrawler up and running doesn’t take long at all. But, fair warning—the interface can feel a bit cluttered with so many elements. This might make it tricky to figure out the steps you need to take to perform a search smoothly.
You can choose specific files, folders, or even drives (with or without subdirectories) to find text in. Plus, there are options to replace text strings with new ones or insert words before or after certain text blocks. If you want to clear or delete anything, that’s possible too!
TextCrawler lets you enable case sensitivity, look for whole words only, and even search using regular expressions. Want to do a fuzzy search? No problem! You can adjust the tolerance level too and set up command lines for batch processing.
The results list shows important details like the name, path, matches found, file size, date modified, type of file, and encoding method for each file containing your search string. At the bottom of the panel, you can see the file content with your target word highlighted!
You can also insert symbols from a character map into your search string or test regular expressions on-the-fly. There's even a scratchpad feature where you can jot down notes! You can export the match list as a CSV file or easily open an item's location in Explorer.
The application is quick when scanning files but usually finishes its job fast. It has good response times and uses moderate-to-high RAM levels. Throughout our tests, we didn’t run into any issues—no hangs or crashes!
