Description
Remember those neat manual pushbutton (mechanical or digital) counters of old? So satisfying to use, right? Well, you can have one on your GNOME desktop if you want, and it's called Tally.
Tally is a free and open-source, Linux-only desktop counter app that allows you - yes, you've guessed it - to manually count everything you want.
One of the main advantages of Tally is the fact that it allows you to add an unlimited number of counters.
Optionally, you can also assign colors to them as well as reorder them according to your needs to keep things as organized as possible.
There aren't that many colors available, so you'll have to do only with seven: white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Another cool aspect is that the app allows you to filter the list of counters.
For instance, you can filter by name, but more importantly, by color. This is super handy when you're dealing with a hefty list with lots of entries.
Tally is a cool little GNOME app that works fabulously. While I do understand the idea of keeping the concept as simple (and arguably as less distracting as possible), I would have loved a bit more customization options.
One good example would be the ability to handpick colors from, you know, a color picker. Secondly, and I know this probably goes against the whole point of the app, it would have been amazing if the app had some sort of integration with GNOME's top bar. For example, it could display one or two important counters in the top bar or even as "floating" previews on the desktop for much easier access.
At the end of the day, I really appreciate the work that has gone into making this app, and I don't mean to say that it's not enough. It's a cool, very good-looking app that works exactly as "advertised."
