Taccy is a handy tool for your Mac that helps you figure out what apps can and can't do. Sometimes, it's hard to know exactly what permissions apps have, but Taccy makes it easy to check!
This app lets you inspect other apps and installer packages. It shows you all the permissions they have and helps you decide if they're safe to use. Plus, it can create logs for those who want to dive deeper into the details.
When you launch Taccy, you'll see it in your Dock. To get started, just drag an app or installer onto its icon or choose one from the File menu. The analysis happens pretty fast, and then the results pop up in the main window.
You might notice some checkboxes in the interface, but here’s a little tip: you can't toggle them on or off like you'd expect! The Save button is actually for exporting logs to a text file instead of those checkboxes.
Taccy shows some important info like the app's bundle identifier and version number. It also tells you if an app has been signed by Apple or if it's from the App Store. You'll even find out if it's hardened or notarized!
This is where it gets interesting! The app shows which types of data it can access and whether it uses public access flags or Apple’s private flags—those are mostly only found in Apple-made apps.
A small suggestion: it'd be awesome if hovering over those parameters gave more info since the current tooltips don’t really help much.
If you're curious about more detailed logs, head over to the Window menu to open up the log window. Here, you'll find entries related to TCC, LaunchServices, securityd, and more. Just remember that this feature requires admin access and can take a while if you're looking back at old logs!
No matter if you're a developer, researcher, or just someone interested in how apps manage your data—Taccy is worth checking out! It's user-friendly but super powerful when you really need it. Download Taccy here!
