Syncthing is a cool option for syncing your files without relying on third-party cloud storage. Instead of storing your data on someone else's server, Syncthing lets you sync the content of a single folder across all connected devices.
To kick things off, just unpack the Syncthing archive and run the executable using Terminal.app. It's super easy! Just launch the app and drag and drop the Syncthing executable into the window. Once that's done, Syncthing will automatically pop open its web GUI in your default browser.
In the web GUI, you can quickly add other nodes to your network. Just hit the Add button and enter the Node ID from the other machine. Remember, you'll also need to add your own node in that machine's Syncthing settings. A quick restart will be needed (you'll find a button for that in the Syncthing web console).
By default, Syncthing syncs files from a Sync folder located in your user directory. If you want to change this, you can edit the config.xml file found in the hidden .syncthing folder created when you first launch the app (make sure to unhide those hidden files!).
Once you've set it up, Syncthing handles synchronization on its own! It rescans for changes every 60 seconds by default but feel free to tweak that interval if you'd like.
You can also customize other settings like reconnect intervals and maximum file change rates. Although setting everything up might seem tricky at first, especially for new users, it's worth it if you're looking to sync data between multiple devices while keeping everything private—no third-party servers involved!
Your transfers are safe thanks to TLS protocol security. Plus, each node gets its very own cryptographic certificate!
