So, let's talk about SUMO, which stands for Simulation of Urban Mobility. This handy tool was created by folks at the Institute of Transportation Systems at the German Aerospace Center. It’s a free and open-source utility that lets you open and simulate big road network files.

What SUMO Does

First things first, SUMO acts mostly like a viewer. While it does have some editing options, you can't create or save any modified road networks. So, keep that in mind!

User Interface

The interface is pretty cool! It has a graphical window and a console window that run at the same time. You can open simulation and network files from examples that come with the software right out of the box.

Network Parameters

With SUMO, you can check out various network parameters. This includes details like how many vehicles are loaded, waiting, departed, running, or arrived. You can also see info about collisions, teleports, start and end times, simulation duration, and more.

Edit Options

You can tweak properties of different items in your design too! Select which lanes to allow—like private cars or emergency vehicles—edit breakpoints, show internal structures, and locate important junctions or points of interest.

Starting Simulations

Starting and stopping simulations is super easy with just one click! Plus, there's a gaming mode where you can tell SUMO to quit once the simulation wraps up. You can even disable textures if you're looking for better performance!

Performance & Stability

No worries about stability here! During our tests, SUMO didn't freeze or crash on us at all. It was light on system resources too—using low CPU and RAM throughout its runtime.
