Description

If you search for "the best image/photo editors" on the Internet, you get many lists of software that all boast names containing words like PRO, AI, Studio, Ultimate, and so forth.

These are without a doubt the cream of the crop in terms of photo editing, and unsurprisingly, most of them require you to empty your wallet in order to access everything they offer.

However, not all users are professional photographers, hence, not everyone needs all firepower. Sometimes, a good ol' simple image editor can do wonders.

Sly is one such app - a user-friendly image editor that literally anyone can use without prior know-how. It's a Linux-only app (at least for now), but don't expect it to offer a pure Linux experience.

The way Sly works is remarkably simple: you just open a photo, you edit it using a series of simple slider-based tools, and you save/export it as JPEG or PNG (with the quality settings you want). That's it.

The GUI is also, no surprise here, very simple. The main part of the main window is dedicated to the picture preview (with real-time preview), and a sidebar (with all the dedicated tools).

Speaking of tools, Sly is not what one might call impressive. All the app's tools are organized into four main sections (accessible from the right-side panel).

The list of tools includes Exposure, Brightness, and Contrast, Blacks, Whites, and Midtones sliders, Saturation, Temperature, and Tint sliders, and a few Effects such as Noise Reduction, Sharpness, Sepia, Vignette, and Border.

The app also allows users to flip, rotate, and crop images. A cool little aspect is the undo and redo controls located at the bottom of the GUI. This allows for a bit more control over the whole editing process. Last but not least, users can also preview edits using a Histogram, even though this feature is not something generally aimed at day-to-day users

Sly is simple and user-friendly, as well as fast and modern-looking. It's not a professional tool by any stretch of the imagination, but for quick no-frills edits, it's pretty good.
