These days, many personal devices are exceptionally expensive yet mass produced, they can be stolen and key information can be erased and passwords changed. One of the few ways to prevent theft and prove the ownership of a device is by recording the serial number, which is often required for police theft reports. SerialVault is an application designed to record serial numbers, product images and other relevant information.

SerialVault provides three different areas to include details on a specific device, while being able to store multiple devices at once. The categories are: the device's name and type, the serial number or product code, then a custom image of the device that users can load into the application.

The image is displayed within the program, in a separate window, so you can browse your devices and see the images automatically. Unfortunately, the application does include a print option, meaning that you still need to keep your images in a separate folder in case they are ever needed.

The lack of a printing option is just one of the potential areas for improvement, an area to write custom notes and details about the product would also be welcome. Users could make notes of any particular scratches or distinguished markings that would make it more recognizable.

One might also appreciate an option to store passwords, passcodes and any other additional upgrades within the device. Additional upgrades within a device such as an SD card, a CD or a memory card are all relevant pieces of information that should not be stored separately.

Given the imperfect nature of SerialVault, users might be more comfortable storing their information on a spreadsheet or just a separate document. Having to store multiple pieces of information across SerialVault and other documents seems inefficient, so more custom areas need to be added. SerialVault needs more work before it can be recommended as a practical solution.
