SAMOVA is a handy little software tool designed to help you figure out how different populations are grouped based on their location. It’s great for spotting genetic barriers between these groups.
You can run SAMOVA on all versions of Windows, which is super convenient. Plus, it’s portable! You can store it on a USB drive or any other portable device and take it with you wherever you go. The best part? You don’t need admin rights to run it!
Getting started is a breeze. Just double-click the executable file, and BAM! You’re in the program's user interface (UI). No mess left behind in your Windows registry—everything stays neat and tidy. If you ever want to uninstall it, all you have to do is delete the files you downloaded.
The interface of SAMOVA is clean and simple. All the settings are neatly organized into one panel, making it easy for you to get everything set up just right. If you need help along the way, there’s an online manual available for guidance!
To make SAMOVA work its magic, you'll need two input files: a GEO file containing geographic coordinates of your sampling locations and an ARP file with genetic data from those populations.
When you're ready to define the genetic structure of those populations, just provide some info like the names of your input files, how many groups you're looking at, initial conditions, and molecular distance settings.
Once everything’s processed, SAMOVA generates several output files for you. These include a plain text file showing genetic structures and fixation indices, a log detailing what actions were taken (to help catch any errors), an Arlequin project file with genetic structure info, an EPS item mapping sampling points and barriers between groups, plus an Arlequin log file listing any errors or warnings.
Tests show that SAMOVA works quickly without hiccups while using only a bit of CPU and memory resources—not too shabby!
In short, SAMOVA packs in plenty of useful features that make applying simulated annealing procedures straightforward. It's especially suited for professional users who need reliable tools for their work.
