Rutherford Scattering is a Java-based simulation that helps you run cool experiments to understand how the plum pudding model of the atom was actually proven wrong. Back in the early 20th century, scientists didn't know much about atoms. They thought that particles were spread out evenly, like raisins in pudding.
This software highlights something called Rutherford scattering. This happens when particles hit the very dense nucleus of an atom. At that time, people believed electrons were scattered throughout a positively charged space, which they called "the pudding." But if this idea was true, then alpha particles shot at an atom would either go through without any change or just get slightly pushed off course.
However, what Ernest Rutherford found out was pretty shocking! He noticed that these alpha particles were bouncing off at big angles - some even turning around completely! This only made sense if most of the atom's mass was packed into a tiny spot, totally going against the plum pudding theory.
With Rutherford Scattering, you can fire alpha particles at an atom's nucleus and watch how they change direction when they get close. You can also adjust their energy levels and play around with how many protons and neutrons are in the nucleus.
The second part of the simulation shows what might have happened if the atom's mass was spread out more widely. In that case, those alpha particles would just glide right through without changing their paths!
