What is Ristretto FOR LINUX?

Ristretto is an open source and freely downloadable graphical software project implemented in GTK+ and designed from the ground up to act as a fast and easy-to-use picture viewer for the lightweight Xfce desktop environment.

Besides the image viewing capabilities, Ristretto also provides the ability to open the current image with an external image editing software, ability to rotate an image, zoom, sort, and view metadata.

The ability to set an image as your default wallpaper, is also incorporated into Ristretto, which allows users to modify the brightness, saturation and style of the image before it’s transformed into a desktop background.

The software’s GUI (Graphical User Interface) is simple, intuitive and easy-to-use, allowing users to drag and drop image files in order to view them. You can also drag & drop a folder that contains images.

It remembers recently viewed images, lets you to save a copy of the currently viewing image file on a location of your choice, allows you to view image properties, such as file type, modified/accessed data, size, date taken, camera model, camera manufacturer and aperture.

The application will allow you to sort images by filename or date, delete images, clear private data, as well as to navigate between images and modify various aspects of the interface.

Looking under the hood of the Ristretto application, we can notice that it has been written in the C programming langauge, using the cross-platform GTK+ GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface.

Runtime dependencies include GTK+ 2.20.x or higher, libxfce4util 4.8.0 or later, libxfce4ui 4.8.0 or higher, libexif 0.6.0 or higher, libdbus-glib 0.34 or later, libexo 0.4.0 or higher, as well as xfconf 4.8.0 or later.
