Resistor Code Reader

Resistor Code Reader is a handy little app that helps you figure out the resistance of a resistor using its color code. It can also show you what a resistor looks like with its color bands when you give it the resistance and tolerance values. Pretty cool, right?

Supported Resistor Types

This app can handle different types of resistors:

  • From value to colors: You can use it for 3, 4, 5, or even 6-line resistors ranging from 1 Ohm up to the highest specified value. Integer values only! And yes, it supports Russian 20%-tolerance resistors too.

  • From colors to value: Need to convert colors into resistance? This feature works with the same types of resistors from 0.1 Ohm up to the max value according to specs.

Converting Colors to Resistance

This part is pretty straightforward:

  • The first line on the resistor is usually the one closest to the end or the widest band.

  • Select the colors of your resistor. If it’s a 4-line resistor, just pick “none” for the 5th line; this will automatically turn off the 6th line.

  • If your resistor has a 6th line, that’s for TCR (Temperature Coefficient of Resistance), which you find in Philips resistors. If you have only five lines, choose “none” for the sixth.

Converting Resistance to Colors

Want to go from resistance back to color? Here’s how:

  • You need to enter an integer value in Ohms, starting from at least 1 Ohm.

  • If you're using a 4-line resistor, remember it only uses two significant digits; for a 5-line one, it's three significant digits. So if you enter "12345", it turns into either 12000 Ohms for a four-liner or 12300 Ohms for a five-liner—totally normal!

  • Select your tolerance level next.

  • If you're looking at a five- or six-line resistor, make sure to uncheck that “4-line resistor” box.

  • For Philips resistors, don’t forget about selecting TCR!

You’ll then see both color names and a graphical model of your resistor! And if tolerance isn’t important to you? No worries! One of the lines will show crossed white lines meaning it could be any color!
