Permissions represent the various settings that have an effect on an application's ability to read, write or execute certain files. If they are not set correctly, some apps may no longer function as expected.
Before OS X El Capitan, the operation of repairing permissions could be performed with the Disk Utility or from the command-line. However, the introduction of System Integrity Protection made this function unnecessary, leading to its removal. Advanced users may still need to fix permissions post working with system files, and RepairPermissions is the perfect tool for the job.
When System Integrity Protection was introduced in El Capitan, it allowed the OS to protect file permissions automatically. Critical folders were locked as write-protected, rendering the 'Repair Disk Permissions' function in Disk Utility obsolete and thus removed.
RepairPermissions can be accessed from the Terminal app with simple commands. Enter the valid mount point of a system partition to start rebuilding caches and repairing permissions for the entire partition. Even in single-user mode, the tool can fix permissions of the current root volume with ease.
While RepairPermissions may not be deemed user-friendly by novices due to its command-line interface, experienced users will find it efficient. The utility performs the task effortlessly, making it convenient to fix system file permissions.
