Hey there! Let’s chat about rcmd. This cool software takes the right Command key on your keyboard and gives it a whole new purpose. You know those modifier keys that often get ignored? Well, rcmd puts them to work! Instead of using Command-Tab all the time to switch between apps, you can use dynamic hotkeys based on each app’s name.
With rcmd, you can quickly switch to any open app by pressing the right Cmd key along with the first letter of the app's name. It’s super intuitive! So, if you're trying to get to Safari, just hit that right Cmd and then 'S'. Easy peasy!
Now, I know what you’re thinking: what if two apps start with the same letter? No worries! The first time you use that hotkey, it’ll take you to the most recently used app. After that, it’ll keep switching between apps that share that starting letter.
If you're dealing with similar names a lot, you can create static hotkeys for those apps. Just focus on the app and hold down ⌘⌥ (Cmd+Opt) while pressing any key you'd like to assign. This way, you’ll have custom shortcuts just for your favorites!
A neat feature of static hotkeys is that they can even launch apps that aren’t already open. Plus, when you hit the hotkey again, you can decide whether it hides the app or cycles through others starting with that same letter.
While rcmd is all about keyboard shortcuts for smooth navigation, it also has an option for a graphical interface (GUI) if that's more your style. Just hold down the right Cmd key and voilà—you’ll see three visual layouts to pick from!
If you're into window switching too, you'll need to install Hammerspoon. This is due to some Sandbox limitations in macOS.
If using Cmd+Tab feels slow when you've got tons of apps open at once—like I do—then rcmd is definitely worth checking out. It makes switching between multiple applications much smoother!
