Description

There’s no easy way to configure the macOS context menu if you want to add new items, at least not without third-party software.

RClick is an open-source app that lets you inject some additional functionality into the standard right-click menu. It makes it possible to open files with specific apps directly, copy the paths of files and folders, delete items, and create various types of new files in any folder.

The first thing you’ll need to do is enable the Finder extension. Then, you have to select the folders the extension is authorized to be active in. The additional menu items will only appear in the authorized folders.

The app is accessed and configured from the menu bar. Only one new app is available in the menu by default, Terminal, but you can add as many as you like. Other actions can only be enabled or disabled—you can’t add new ones.

In practice, RClick has plenty of uses. You can use any of the customizable shortcuts to open files or folders in certain apps instantly, and it’s especially helpful for opening a Terminal window in a certain path.

Other actions allow you to copy a file or folder’s path to the clipboard or delete them directly, skipping the Trash folder altogether.

If you right-click inside a folder, you also have the option to create various types of new files, such as TXT, Markdown, JSON, or Office documents. Note that this will only work inside a Finder window, not directly on the desktop.

RClick makes the right-click context menu a little bit more useful, and it can be very helpful in certain workflows. You can toggle any of the default actions and add any other apps you wish to open files with.
