RasMol is a super handy app for viewing molecules, whether they’re tiny or massive proteins. It’s great for exploring and gives you lots of options to rotate and look at things from different angles. Perfect for those who love diving into the details of molecular structures!
This software is aimed at students, teachers, and anyone in academia who wants to check out molecule structures in a fun and engaging way. It’s designed to make the learning experience enjoyable.
You won’t have any issues getting started with RasMol. The installation is quick and easy, plus the user interface is super friendly! You’ll find everything neatly organized in menus that are simple to navigate—especially if you're a scientist.
You can easily add files using specific commands or just drag and drop them into the app. RasMol supports several formats like PDB (Protein Data Bank), MDL, MSC, Alchemy, CIS, Mopac, and more!
Your viewing experience can be tailored through the Display menu. There’s a wide range of options here including wireframe, backbone, spacefill, sticks, ribbons, strands, cartoons, and molecular surface views. Plus, you can customize colors in the Colours menu to highlight different parts of a molecule!
If you want a cleaner view without certain elements like hydrogens or hetero atoms cluttering up your model, you can easily toggle these off from the Options section. It’s all about what works best for you!
The Export menu has tons of generous options as well. You can save your current model in various formats such as BMP, GIF, PS, PPM, VRML—just to name a few.
Overall, RasMol leaves a good impression! However, one thing we noticed during testing was that there isn’t a zoom function available—which seems odd for software focused on viewing.
