rar2fs

rar2fs is a cool tool that lets you mount RAR archives or folders full of RAR files. You can then read what's inside like it's just a regular file! If there are other types of files in the same spot, no worries—they'll be handled without any fuss. You can work with both compressed and uncompressed archives, but keep in mind that indexing only works with plain text, non-compressed files.

Understanding RAR Encryption

The RAR format has built-in encryption options, and guess what? rar2fs can handle those encrypted archives too! But here's the catch: you need to save the archive's password in plain text on your local system since rar2fs doesn't interactively ask for it. This could be a security concern, so it's best to use this feature sparingly. If security is super important for you, consider using encryption at the file system level instead.

How It Works with Libraries

This software uses the Portable UnRAR C++ library along with some extra extensions. To get everything up and running smoothly, you'll need to have a complete version of the UnRAR source tree for those API extensions. Plus, to build rar2fs, make sure you've got the FUSE development files on your machine. The latest versions also support MacFUSE, with FUSE for OS X added since version 1.15.2!
