RadeonHD Video Driver is a cool open-source driver made for AMD GPG r5xx/r6xx chipsets. If you're working with ATI graphics devices, this driver is something you should know about!



What Is the RadeonHD Driver?


The radeonhd driver, or xf86-video-radeonhd, is an X.org video driver that supports R500 and newer ATI graphics devices. It's developed by Novell specifically for AMD, and they've even got free documentation available from AMD to help out.



Driver Features


This driver supports full modesetting, which means it’s compatible with RandR 1.2. However, it's good to note that it’s still missing some advanced features like 2D, 3D, and video acceleration since the info needed to make those work isn’t available yet.



What's New in This Release?


Here are some exciting updates:



  • Support added for RV620, RV635, and R680 chipsets.

  • 2D acceleration now available for R5xx (including RS6xx), using both XAA and EXA methods.

  • A new DDIA block support (for second digital output) on RS690.

  • Support for interlaced modes has been added!

  • Additions made to split outputs into encoders and transmitters as needed for new hardware.

  • DragonFly BSD support is now included.

  • The handling of secondary cards has been improved.

  • This release lays down groundwork for future TV support!

  • A ton of bug fixes and minor updates have also been rolled out.
