Purge Memory is a free and super easy-to-use app for Mac OS X. This handy little tool runs the Unix "purge" command and then quits right away.
The Unix "purge" command helps boost the "Free" memory on your Mac. You can check this in Apple's Activity Monitor under the system memory tab. What it does is clear out the "Inactive" memory, making more space for your apps to run smoothly.
You could do this all by typing the purge command in a Terminal window, but having Purge Memory on your desktop is way easier than messing with Terminal every time!
To get started, just double-click the app. It runs quickly and then closes itself. There's no complicated user interface to worry about—just a simple click and you're good to go!
You can keep the Purge Memory application anywhere on your hard drive. Just a heads up, though: some versions of OS X might need you to have Developer Tools installed for everything to work right. The Unix executable can be found in /usr/bin
.
