Description

It’s gotten to the point that everyone needs at least a basic password manager. Whether we want to or not, we have to create dozens of accounts for all kinds of online services, and it’s incredibly difficult to remember their passwords without compromising your security.

Proton Pass is a relative newcomer to the password management field, as part of Proton’s wide-ranging security and privacy initiative. It’s a powerful and highly intuitive cross-platform app, very well suited for any user looking for their first password manager.

All the basics are here: you can store account credentials, notes, card info, and contact information, as well as generate secure passwords. These can be organized into multiple vaults, and the interface makes editing and accessing them very straightforward.

Of course, you can also share your stored info via secure links, as well as share an entire vault. This allows you to, for instance, create a separate vault for family or coworkers containing credentials multiple people need to access.

A very cool feature is the ability to generate email aliases that obfuscate your real email address and redirect all messages to your inbox. This keeps your real email private, protecting you from leaks and spam.

Proton Pass comes with a built-in 2FA authenticator, giving you an extra layer of security without having to use a separate authenticator app. It can also monitor all your accounts and notify you if they have been compromised in a data breach.

Optional extensions are available for all major browsers, including Safari. You can use this to autofill account credentials and speed up logging in.

Proton Pass has all the features you want from a password manager, and most are available for free. However, you are limited in some respects, such as being unable to store credit cards or use biometrics.

If you do plan on getting a subscription, the price is quite reasonable, especially if you go for the full Proton Unlimited package, which includes other privacy-focused utilities, such as Proton VPN and Proton Mail.
