Description
Proton Drive is yet another product in the Proton suite, this time providing you with a secure cloud storage alternative. Its main strength is its enhanced security, with a decent amount of storage in the free tier as well.
The Mac app is designed to let you synchronize data via a dedicated folder, with no other features at the moment. It lacks much of the functionality offered by the Windows version of the app.
During installation, a dedicated folder will be created on your Mac, where you can place files to upload them to your cloud storage, and where files in the cloud will be downloaded locally. As expected, you can remove local file copies to save space, and then download them later.
The file synchronization process can be monitored from the menu bar. Here, you’ll see when files are being transferred and the current upload or download speed, and you can pause and resume syncing at any time.
In terms of what the Mac app can do, that’s pretty much it. Unfortunately, most of the features we see in the Windows version haven’t made their way to macOS yet, so the app has very limited functionality at the moment.
For instance, you can’t back up other local folders to cloud storage, you cannot share or manage shared files, and you can’t view and recover previous file versions. Essentially, the only thing you can do is sync the contents of the Proton folder.
Proton has made its name through a commitment to privacy, and its cloud storage service is no different. It uses end-to-end encryption, all desktop apps are open-source for transparency, and the company is based on privacy-friendly Switzerland.
While the Mac app is a bit lackluster at present, Proton Drive is still a good choice, at least if you don’t need the missing functionality. The free edition offers a generous amount of storage, and if you want to take advantage of the entire privacy suite, Proton Unlimited is definitely a great deal.
