Description
ProFUSE
ProFUSE is a free and open-source FUSE filesystem designed for ProDOS disk images. Right now, it only works in read-only mode.
Understanding ProFUSE Features
The OS X version of ProFUSE comes with some cool enhancements, but it's not without its issues. One big thing to note is that ProFUSE doesn’t work with OS X 10.7, also known as Lion. Why? Well, MacFUSE is a 32-bit kernel extension, and since OS X switched to a 64-bit kernel starting with version 10.7, that’s a problem! This means you can't use ProFUSE unless you're on an earlier version.
Compatibility Issues
If you’re using certain computers like newer xserves or Mac Pros running Snow Leopard, they might also face the same issue because they use a 64-bit kernel too.
Future Updates
As of now, it’s unclear if MacFUSE will ever get updated to support a 64-bit kernel. But don't lose hope! I’ve had some success using osxfuse instead—there's even an app called the Lion Image Opener (version 1.0.1) that works with osxfuse.
Using the Command Line
You’ll need to run the profuse command right from your Terminal (that’s the command line interface). Just type:
profuse name_of_disk_image:
If typing out the full pathname sounds like a hassle, just drag and drop your file into the terminal window!
No Need for Mount Points
The great news is that unlike the Linux/Unix version, you don’t have to set up a mount point yourself; one will be created automatically in your /Volumes/ folder.
Finding Your Mounted Disks
If you want to see your mounted disks in Finder, just go to Go > Computer, or hit Shift-Command-C. You should see your ProDOS disk image pop up there!
Showing ProDOS Images on Desktop
By default, only local disks show up on your Finder desktop. If you want your ProDOS disk images to appear there too, make sure to check “Connected servers” in Finder's preferences panel.
If you're ready to give it a try or learn more about how ProFUSE can help you manage those disk images effectively!
