Apple's in-house SOC's have proven to be a massive improvement over the old Intel processors, offering a significant performance boost and reduced power consumption. However, you can't normally tell just how much power your Mac is using at any given time.
PowerMetrix is a very small app that runs in the menu bar and displays the current power consumption of your Apple Silicon SOC at all times. It also shows power usage split into CPU, GPU, and the media engine.
When you start up the app, you should see a new menu bar icon that indicates the SOC's total power consumption. It's continuously updated, and you can click the icon to bring up a window with more information.
This data can give you a better understanding of how the processor works, and it's always impressive to see just how little power they require.
The main window includes a real-time graph that shows each parameter's state for the last few seconds and separate readings for the SOC's CPU, GPU, and media engine.
Everything works as well as could be expected, but it might help to have the option to view data collected over more than just the last few seconds.
PowerMetrix is a very small app, and it's written entirely in Swift, so you can expect it to run efficiently in the background. It doesn't have a lot of features, but that's probably a good thing for an app designed to record and display power usage. If you have an Apple Silicon-powered Mac and want a better idea of exactly how power efficient it really is, this app will do the job.
