Passwd is a free, open-source app that works on any platform. It’s specially made for the Horde Application Framework to help you change passwords easily. If you’re not familiar with it, the Horde Framework is a PHP-based set of tools that helps run web applications smoothly.
One cool thing about Passwd is its support for changing passwords using various methods like LDAP, Poppassd, and UNIX expect scripts. It also works with Kolab, Pine, ADSI, Serv-U FTP, vpopmail, SQL passwords, VMailMgr, and even the UNIX smbpasswd command for SMB and CIFS passwords.
This handy tool comes as part of a bunch of account management modules within the Horde Framework called Sork. This collection includes other useful tools like Vacation and Forwards alongside Passwd.
Before you dive into installing the Passwd app on your Horde framework, make sure you have all the necessary runtime dependencies in place. You’ll need a working PHP installation that supports SOAP, LDAP, Mcrypt, Hash, and Character Type. Don’t forget to install the Crypt_CHAP PEAR module too!
You’ll need to use the PEAR installer to get Passwd up and running. If you don’t have it installed yet, check out how to do that on this page. Once PEAR is good to go on your system, just pop open your terminal emulator software and run this command: pear install -a -B horde/passwd
.
If you prefer a simpler installation with just what's needed, run pear install horde/passwd
. Or if you're feeling adventurous and want everything included with binary dependencies too, try pear install -a horde/passwd
.
Before jumping into using Passwd, make sure it’s configured properly. You can find all the official configuration instructions here. Be sure to check out more details about LDAP setups and how SQL implementations work.
