OS X Recovery Disk Assistant
OS X Recovery Disk Assistant is a handy tool right inside your Mac's OS X. With this, you can fix disks or reinstall OS X without needing a physical disc. It's pretty cool!
What Does It Do?
This assistant lets you create a version of OS X Recovery on an external drive. It has all the same features as the built-in version. You can:
- Reinstall OS X
- Repair disks with Disk Utility
- Restore from your Time Machine backup
- Browse the web using Safari
When to Use It?
If your computer can’t start using the built-in Recovery HD, or if you've swapped out your hard drive for a new one that doesn’t have Mac OS X, this external recovery drive will come in clutch!
Requirements for Creation
Just a quick note: To make an external OS X Recovery with the OS X Recovery Assistant, your Mac needs to already have a working Recovery HD.
How to Create Your External Recovery Drive
If you’re ready to get started, first download the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant application. After that, plug in your external drive and open up the assistant. Choose where you want to install it and just follow the simple on-screen instructions.
Accessing Your New Drive
Once you're done creating it, you won’t see the new partition in Finder or Disk Utility right away. To access Lion Recovery, restart your computer while holding down the Option key. Then just choose the Recovery HD from Startup Manager.
