OS X Recovery Disk Assistant is a handy tool that comes built right into your OS X. This feature allows you to fix disks or even reinstall OS X without needing a physical disc. Pretty cool, right?
This assistant helps you create an OS X Recovery on an external drive, which means it has all the same awesome features as the built-in recovery. You can reinstall OS X, repair your disk using Disk Utility, restore from a Time Machine backup, or even surf the web using Safari.
You might wonder when this would come in handy. Well, if your computer doesn’t start up with the built-in Recovery HD or if you've swapped out your hard drive for a new one that doesn't have Mac OS X installed yet, this tool is exactly what you need!
Important Note: To set up an external OS X Recovery using the OS X Recovery Assistant, make sure your Mac already has an existing Recovery HD.
If you're ready to create your own external OS X Recovery, just download the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant. After that, plug in your external drive and launch the assistant. Then select the drive where you want to install everything and just follow the instructions on-screen.
Once you've completed everything with the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant, don't panic if you don’t see the new partition in Finder or Disk Utility! To access Lion Recovery, simply reboot your computer while holding down the Option key. Then choose from Startup Manager to select the Recovery HD.
