Description
Once Apple drops support for a device, you can’t install new versions of macOS on it, at least not without a third-party tool. Thankfully, if you want to keep an older device alive, it is possible to take advantage of new OS releases and even enable some new features.
OpenCore Legacy Patcher is a project based on OpenCorePkg, with the aim of allowing macOS installation on unsupported Macs, as well as unblocking various features. It helps users create patched installers via a GUI, with extensive documentation available.
To begin with, you’ll need to install the patcher and run it. From this interface, you’ll be able to either build and install OpenCore on a selected drive, create a bootable macOS installer, or install hardware drivers and patches after macOS has already been installed.
You can get started by creating a USB installer. The app can download an installer for the macOS version you wish to use, or you can provide the installer yourself. Next, the installer will be patched and a bootable USB created, which you can use to install the OS on an unsupported device.
After installing, you need to build and install OpenCore on the internal drive in order to boot without the USB drive. You can also disable the boot picker from the app’s settings for seamless booting.
