Description
NTFS-3G
NTFS-3G is a handy open-source Linux driver that works on both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware. This software makes it super easy for you to mount and write to hard drives that are formatted with the NTFS filesystem used in Windows. So, if you're switching between Linux and Windows, this is a must-have!
History of NTFS-3G
The project kicked off back in 2006, thanks to Szabolcs Szakacsits. He built it on some earlier work from Yura Pakhuchiy, who created the libntfs library and the ntfsmount program. NTFS-3G took those ideas and ran with them, adding some cool performance boosts along the way, especially when it comes to writing data on NTFS drives.
What Can You Do with NTFS-3G?
Once you have this driver installed on your Linux machine, you'll be able to do all sorts of things like create, move, rename, and delete files or folders. Plus, it can read and write data on NTFS partitions without breaking a sweat! That includes dealing with streams and even transparently compressed files.
Special Features
This driver also lets you handle special files like FIFOs, symbolic links, and devices. It gives you basic control over file ownership too! In simple terms, it offers full read-write access to your NTFS partitions without any hassle.
How to Mount Drives
You can mount either an image file or a block device easily. For instance, you can use commands like ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows or mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows. This will get your drive set up in the /mnt/windows folder on your Linux system.
Advanced Mount Options
If you're looking for more options when mounting an NTFS drive—like using ro (read-only mode), uid= settings for ownership changes—you've got plenty of flexibility! For example, you can mount an NTFS partition using ntfs-3g -o permissions /dev/sda2 /mnt/ntfs_drive.
Unmounting Drives
If you want to unmount a drive you've already mounted from your Linux system? Just run umount /mnt/mount_folder, and you're good to go!
