Description
For most day-to-day users, network configuration tasks are probably not among the list of most loved things, and for good reason. Understanding all the nuances and underpinnings of configuring complex network environments takes a lot of time and know-how.
That's the main reason why Netsleuth was created.
Netsleuth is a very useful, tiny utility that's all about simplifying network configuration tasks. More to the point, it's a free and open-source IP subnet calculator app.
If you're new to "all of this," subnetting is the process of dividing a network into smaller (network) sections. Also, each network can only have one subnet (which also contains all the specific host addresses).
At heart, Netsleuth is a very simple app. The way it works is quite straightforward: you simply add the IP address and the Subnet Mask in the designated sections at the top of the GUI, and click the "Calculate" button.
The app displays a series of useful results such as the address of the subnet, the netmask, the wildcard, network, as well as first host, last host, broadcast, total hosts, PTR records, and the category.
Each of these results can be instantly copied to the clipboard (via simple buttons on the right side), and that's about it.
Clearly, Netsleuth is not the type of app that advanced network administrators require. It's more of an app dedicated to day-to-day users, thanks to its simple nature.
It won't fix any networking problems on its own, but it will shed a bit of light when it comes to understanding the intricate details of IP protocols and subnet values. A very cool app that also happens to fully follow the GNOME Code of Conduct.
