What is Netinfo FOR LINUX?

Netinfo

Netinfo is a handy app that collects network information. If you’ve ever been in a big campus with lots of computers, you know how tricky it can be to keep track of who’s using what IP address. It’s pretty common to spot an IP causing issues, but figuring out where it’s coming from can be a real headache!

Locating Problematic IP Addresses

This is where Netinfo comes in! The app does the hard work by locating every known IP address on campus. It uses something called SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) to gather info from routers and switches—both Layer 2 (L2) and Layer 3 (L3). Right now, it only works with Cisco devices, but it could be extended to support others if they provide the right SNMP info.

Cisco Requirements

If you're using Cisco switches, make sure they have IOS version 12.0 or higher. Older versions won't give you the details Netinfo needs.

Understanding Location Data

Netinfo combines all this collected data to show the location of every used IP and MAC address on campus. And when we say location, we mean the network port of the nearest device that was checked.

Reliable Performance

This app has shown it can perform reliably even on large campuses with around 2000 PCs and about 30 monitored network devices. So if you need help managing your network, give Netinfo a try!
