Description

n2n

n2n is a layer-two peer-to-peer (P2P) virtual private network (VPN). It lets users take advantage of P2P features right at the network level, instead of just at the application level. So, if you have two PCs connected to the same n2n network, they can ping each other and share the same network IP address no matter where they are. Basically, while OpenVPN moved SSL from just being an application thing (like when you use https) to a network protocol, n2n brings P2P capabilities into the networking world.

How Does n2n Work?

The n2n architecture is built around two main components:

  • Edge Nodes: These are applications installed on your PCs that help create the n2n network. Each edge node sets up a tun/tap device, which acts as an entry point into the n2n network.

  • A Supernode: This is used by edge nodes when they start up or need to connect with nodes behind symmetrical firewalls. Think of it as a directory register and packet router for those nodes that can't communicate directly.

Setting Up Your n2n Network

Here’s how you can set up your own n2n network:

  1. Download and compile the code.

  2. Select where to place your supernode. For example, let’s say you put it on host a.b.c.d at port xyw.

  3. Choose an encryption password for securing your data. Let's say you go with encryptme.

  4. Name your network; for instance, call it mynetwork. Keep in mind that one supernode/edge node can manage multiple networks!

  5. Select IP addresses for your edge nodes; for example, use IP address 10.1.2.0/24.

  6. Start your applications:

    • #supernode > supernode -l xyw

    • #edge node1 > edge -a 10.1.2.1 -c mynetwork -k encryptme -l a.b.c.d:xyw

    • #edge node2 > edge -a 10.1.2.2 -c mynetwork -k encryptme -l a.b.c.d:xyw

Testing Your n2n Network

Now it’s time to test out your new setup:

  • #edge node1 > ping 10.1.2.2
