Description

It's not often we get open-source apps that are so good that they can be somewhat life-changing. However, every once in a while an app such as Minuet comes along and has the potential to make the lives of a lot of people a bit better.

Minuet won't resolve all your childhood traumas or life issues, but it will (if you give it a try) help you become a better musician by providing you with a plethora of very good ear training exercises. You know - the process of connecting music theory and concepts with the sounds you hear.

In short, Minuet is a free and open-source music education software developed by KDE (part of the KDE Edu Suite).

This is an app that's perfect for beginners or students and teachers who are interested in music education in the form of ear training, first-sight reading, solfa, scales, rhythm, harmony, and even improvisation.

What's probably the most amazing thing about Minuet is not that it's free or open-source, but the fact that it caters to both beginners and more experienced musicians. It boasts nearly 40 exercises regarding intervals, scales, chords, and rhythms.

One could argue that Minuet is not exactly the most configurable app out there, but it does make use of MIDI capabilities to provide users with control over aspects such as volume, tempo, and pitch.

Another really cool thing about Minuet is that it's quite extensible. You can very easily adapt it to your music education context by creating/adding your own ear training exercises.

Even though this is a KDE app, it should work on most other Linux distros, as well as on Android devices. Thanks to its presence on Flathub and Snap Store, you can pretty much run the app on most modern Linux distros, no matter the preferred desktop environment.

What could be better? Well, Minuet is not a new app. Hence, I would have liked to see a bit more configuration options, as well as a bit more extensive music data/music education explanations for complete beginners. Other than that, a very solid app that's surely worth installing if you're serious about taking your music skills to the next level.
