What is MailViewer FOR LINUX?
Even though Outlook is not particularly popular in 2024, opening Outlook/Microsoft-specific email formats (such as MSG, EML, OST, EDB, MBOX, and PST) on Linux computers can be a bit weird.
That's exactly why an app like MailViewer is worth having around.
To put it as simply as possible, MailViewer is a simple, free and open-source (Linux-only) app that allows users to view both EML (.eml) and MSG (.msg) email files.
The main reason MailViewer exists is convenience, as it allows users to view Microsoft/Outlook emails on their systems without creating online accounts or additional software. In short, users are provided with a typical GUI for easy navigation that renders the email content (attachments included, which I think is a cool feature).
The app is also capable of rendering HTML and plain text. At its core, MailViewer is a lightweight app built with Rust and the fact that its GUI is GTK4/Libadwaita makes it feel at home on GNOME-based systems.
To conclude, MailViewer is not an all-encompassing or impressive app. It's a simple email viewer app that only renders two specific formats, as well as attachments, HTML, or plain texts. Once an email is opened, the app displays the file's format, the name, the email's subject, sender, receiver, and content.
In terms of extras, users will have to do with some simple features (accessible from the top toolbar) such as Zoom In, Zoom Out, Force CSS, Show Images, and Show Plain Text. In terms of customization, the app only offers the option to either show or hide the name of the email in the top bar. To be honest, this is a perfectly adequate app that works exactly as it should. I could say that I would like to see some extra configuration options, but really, it's fine as it is.
