What Makes This Virus Tick?

This virus is actually an upgraded version of the older Win32.Magistr.A@mm. It’s got a fancier decryption routine, which makes it trickier to clean up. The original data from the Entry Point is now locked up with a key that comes from your computer name. So, getting rid of those infected files isn’t as easy as before.

How Does It Spread?

This new version can infect more computers on a network because it’s on the lookout for even more Windows directory names than its predecessor. Here’s what it searches for:

• WINDOWS


• WIN95


• WIN98


• WINME


• WINNT


• WIN2000


• WIN2K


• WINXP

If it finds these directories, it’ll infect all the files in them. After that, it sneaks into WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files by adding itself under the [Windows] and [Run] sections in WIN.INI, and under [boot] and [Shell] sections in SYSTEM.INI.

The Registry Sneak-In

This tricky virus also plants itself in the registry on your local machine. It does this under the key: HKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run, using the name of the first infected file and pointing to its path.

Email Hijinks!

This new version has taken things up a notch by searching for email addresses not just in Outlook Express but also in Eudora's address book and Netscape too! And guess what? The email texts are now in French as well. Some words used to craft those messages include:
