MacPorts is a handy software package that helps you compile, install, and upgrade OS X applications. These apps are often made for the command line or based on the X11 or Aqua systems.
Getting Started with MacPorts
To kick things off, you'll want to make sure you have both Xcode and the Xcode Command Line Tools installed on your Mac. Once that's done, open your Terminal application and run this command to agree to the Apple Xcode license: sudo xcodebuild -license.
Installing MacPorts
The next step is to launch the MacPorts package. Follow the easy on-screen instructions to complete the installation. After you're done, just open Terminal again and quickly update the port definitions included in it.

Once you spot a software port you're interested in, just run the right installation command in Terminal. And don’t worry; if you decide you want to uninstall something later, MacPorts has you covered with simple commands for that too!
