Logisim is a Java-based educational application that can help you create the schemas for logic circuits. The project’s development has been halted for quite some time, yet the utility still runs on the latest macOS version.

Logisim comes with a minimalist user interface that is dominated by the canvas area where you can comfortably add all the elements you want to include in the logic circuit.

To help you get started, each Logisim project has access to predefined graphic objects that are organized into categories: wiring, gates, plexers, arithmetic, RAM memory, input/output, and base.

To add any of them to your design, just select them from the list and then click with your mouse in the canvas area. Naturally, you get to move the objects around later on, or just make connections.

Logisim includes a detailed User Manual that provides extensive information about all the available tools and models. The documentation also comprises a beginner’s tutorial that takes you through the designing and testing process.

Within the Logisim canvas area, you get to built circuits of various complexity levels and understand their behavior. The drawing relies on intuitive commands, you get to create wires with simple movements, you have the option to use layouts as subcircuits, and so on.

You can save your work by using the Logisim proprietary file format (.circ), which means that you will be able to make adjustments to the design at a later time. On the other hand, you can also share the schema as an image file, using the PNG, GIF, or JPEG formats.

Logisim can prove to be a rather useful educational tool if you need to understand how logic circuits work and design a CPU just to practice applying basic concepts.

The Logisim project has not been revised for a long time but, considering it runs on the Java platform, it should work even on the most recent macOS configurations.
