libdvdcss

libdvdcss is a handy library made by the VideoLAN Project. It lets you read DVDs without needing to mess around with decryption. Plus, it can read discs from different regions than your drive, which is super useful if you're planning to use Handbrake to rip DVDs on your Mac.

Getting Started with libdvdcss

Now, by default, the libdvdcss library comes as source code. That means you'll have to configure, build, and install it through the command line yourself. But don't worry! The awesome team at Softpedia has already compiled the libdvdcss library from source and tested it on OS X El Capitan, macOS Sierra, and macOS High Sierra.

To get started:

1. Download the zip file and unzip libdvdcss_1.4.2.zip to your Downloads folder.

Installation Options

Option One: Just double-click on Auto_install.command.

Option Two: If you prefer using Terminal, run these commands:

sudomkdir/usr/local/lib/

sudo cp ~/Downloads/libdvdcss_1.4.2/libdvdcss.2.dylib /usr/local/lib/libdvdcss.2.dylib

How It Works

The libdvdcss library includes some known CSS keys used for decoding DVD content. If one key doesn't work out, it'll move on to decrypting the stream directly!

Tweaking Settings Easily

You can adjust certain variables like DVDCSS_VERBOSE or DVD_CACHE without having to change the app that uses this library.
