Description
… In 1815, Jean Valjean was freed from the galleys of Toulon after having served a 19-year sentence there: victim of a tragic fate, initially sentenced to five years in galleys for having stolen a loaf to feed his family, he sees his sentence extended following several escape attempts. In freedom, his forced past overwhelms him: thus, in each city he crosses, forced to make known to the town hall his status as a former convict that a yellow passport materializes, he is universally rejected and only Bishop Myriel l 'welcomes for food and lodging. Jean Valjean, infatuated with hatred, struck with injustice, and little aware of his actions, steals the bishop's silverware and flees through the window. When he was arrested and brought back by the gendarmes to Mgr Myriel, he forgave him and declared that he had offered him his silverware, thus saving him from the conviction for recidivism. He urges Valjean to accept two additional candlesticks against the virtue and integrity of his future conduct. (Wikipedia)
