How Does LeopardAssist Work?

So, here’s the magic behind LeopardAssist: it uses a neat little trick with Open Firmware. This changes how your computer reports its CPU speed to pretend it's running at 867MHz. Then, it starts the installer directly from your CD.

The Technical Stuff

If you're curious about the details, here’s how it goes: the app writes a file called “boot.txt” right onto the root directory of your hard drive. It also configures something called NVRAM (or PRAM) so that when you restart your computer, it knows to boot from this file. When that happens, Open Firmware reads “boot.txt,” gets instructions to switch up the CPU speed, and then boots from your CD or DVD where the Leopard installer is waiting.

No DVD Hacks Needed!

This simple trick means you won’t have to modify your DVD at all! Once you finish installing or when you're ready to reboot after installation, just flash your PRAM back to return everything to normal. This restores your original CPU speed and gets booting back on track from your hard disk.

Reversible Effects

The best part? All effects of LeopardAssist are totally reversible! If you want to go back to how things were before, just hold down Command (Apple) + Option + P + R while restarting until you hear that second chime. Easy peasy!
