LAME Framework is a handy software package that gives you the compiled version of the LAME open-source MPEG Audio Layer III encoder, which we all know as MP3. This project is under the LGPL license, so if you're feeling adventurous, you can rebuild the library yourself!
If you're curious about the source code, it’s available on the LAME project page. Just a heads up—you'll need to have Xcode installed on your Mac first. Once you’ve got that sorted, download the Lame source code and run the included script. Before you know it, you'll have access to the new libmp3lame.dylib build.
This version of LAME Framework is based on lame-3.97 and is designed specifically for PowerPC-based Mac computers. If you're using an Intel machine, this might not work for you.
The cool thing about the LAME Framework package is that it comes with an installer project. This makes it super easy to set up the LAME library in your /usr/local/lib
folder. Want to create your own installer? Just use this command:
sudo /Developer/Tools/packagemaker -build -proj (installer name).pmproj -p ../Lame\ (package name).pkg
LAME Framework is incredibly useful if you're looking to process MP3 audio files in Audacity. It’s perfect for those who aren’t comfortable with Terminal commands or simply don’t want to spend time compiling the source code.
