What is KTouch FOR LINUX?
There's no denying that the latest generations are a lot more tech-savvy, and it should come as no surprise that most young people from all around the world are "computer whizzes."
That said, typing on keyboards (be they digital or real) is something that comes quite naturally to most of them. There are, however, various keyboard typing skills, and no matter how good one is at typing, there's always room for improvement.
That's exactly why KTouch was made. It's a free and open-source KDE app that aims to help users learn and practice touch typing. To keep it as short as possible, touch typing is typing relying on your muscle memory rather than your eyesight (being perfectly aware of where all the keys are without having to look at the keyboard).
KTouch is without a doubt an exciting app. For starters, most apps of this sort are web apps, and those that are desktop-based, well, they're just not all that good.
The way the app works is that it takes the user through different levels of learning. One awesome aspect of the app is that it can be used by both complete beginners and users who are really good at touch typing.
The app boasts dozens of different courses and comes with support for a wide range of languages and keyboard layouts. This is probably the best time to point out that users can create their own custom-defined layouts.
During your training sessions, the app collects a wide range of statistical information and displays reports in order to help you analyze your progress and, ultimately, improve your writing skills.
KTouch really managed to make me smile. I enjoyed playing around with it, and even though I am probably not part of the intended user-base, I can totally see how this app can be an awesome companion for people looking to improve or simply get into touch typing.
I also enjoyed the fact that the app indicates which key to press next and which is the correct finger to use, as well as the fact that the app allows a bit of customization when it comes to picking out the colors for these visual cues.
