Description

I can think of very few things more beautiful than serving the underserved, the downtrodden, and the unfortunate. Many places on the planet are in dire need of health care, clean water, and among many others,  education.

Clearly, this is something that can be fixed with one good deed, or one good idea, but just as clearly, every small gesture counts.

Developed by what I think to be a very forward-thinking nonprofit organization (called Learning Equality), Kolibri is a very interesting application/platform that deserves a lot, including our recognition and respect.

What is Kolibri exactly? Kolibri is a free, open-source, cross-platform, and offline-first app for universal education. In short, it's a set of open solutions for both educators and learners developed sustainably to support education in the half of the world that doesn't have Internet access.

Kolibri connects users with the Kolibri Content Library. This library is made up of open and appropriately licensed resources from around the world. It features over 80 educations educational collections of assessments, books, simulations, games, and other types of learning content.

The whole point of Kolibri is to be accessible. For this exact reason, Kolibri is available in a wide range of languages, it's designed for training and learning in pretty much all types of learning environments (formal, informal, and non-formal) and, according to the developers, it is actively used in over 200 countries and territories where people live in underserved contexts.

The people around this project really thought about what Kolibri should be. Hence, Kolibri is an app that requires minimal system resources in order to run smoothly, meaning it pretty much runs on anything you can imagine, from low-end mobile devices to underpowered PCs with legacy hardware, and even Raspberry Pis.

Needless to say, it runs on all major desktop platforms out there including Linux, Windows, and macOS. The app also features a few nifty features such as support for live synchronization and data sharing.

This Peer-to-Peer distribution approach allows any "Seeded" device to share content and updates to other devices over an offline local network, for instance. Of course, that does require an active internet connection for the initial device.

The last part of the "puzzle," actually reaching the remote communities who need Kolibri is done via the so-called "sneakernet." It may seem funny, but a device carried by foot can share all the updates, all installers, and all the required content with other devices via local networks.

As mentioned before, fixing humanity's biggest problems isn't something that can be done in a day, but platforms and apps such as Kolibri give me hope that we're on the right track toward making the world a better place.
