Description
Apple loves silent keyboards, and so do most of their customers. Nevertheless, clicky mechanical keyboards have a certain appeal, providing audio feedback while often also helping you focus.
KeyClicker can bring you some of the benefits of mechanical keyboards and typewriters without some of their drawbacks. It simulates various types of key switches, with lots of room for customization.
The app’s functionality couldn’t be simpler: when you press a key, a sound is played that corresponds to a certain type of keyboard switch, typewriter, or even some random funny noises.
Unlike some other similar apps, once you select one of the options, every key will sound the same. You have the ability to customize each key’s sound, but there’s no simple preset that will emulate the different sounds made by smaller or larger keys.
Thankfully, you can go some way towards remedying the lack of variation. Each key can have a specific sound assigned, so you can make them all different to a certain extent. It is a lot of work, however, and you’re not guaranteed to find ones that sound just right and go well together.
This is especially noticeable when using the typewriter preset. On a real typewriter, some of the keys sound radically different, and the app doesn’t give you any alternative typewriter sounds even if you were to try and customize individual keys.
It should be commended that KeyClicker comes with a lot of key sounds, more than you see in other similar applications. That being said, it’s a long just to scroll through, and the names aren’t very descriptive.
What I would like to see are keyboard presets that give you more variation right off the bat, with certain keys making different noises, just like their real-life counterparts.
