Kext Drop is a super easy software that lets you install kernel extensions on macOS with just a simple drag and drop. It's really user-friendly! When you want to load a .kext module, Kext Drop detects it for you and then asks for your confirmation before installing it.
The macOS operating system has its own base kernel, but it also allows you to extend what it can do with custom kernel modules. These modules are often used to add support for new hardware, and guess what? You can easily remove them when you no longer need them!
Kext Drop is made to make loading custom kernel modules as simple as possible. All you have to do is drag the .kext package right onto the Kext Drop window. No complicated steps here!
In the Kext Drop window, you'll see the name of the kernel module you're about to install. Just hit the "Install" button to finish up! But remember, Kext Drop only handles installation; you'll need to provide the correct kext yourself.
Now, here's something important: newer versions of macOS include System Integrity Protection (SIP). This feature stops root users from changing certain folders like /System, /usr, /bin, or /sbin. So, if you want to load those .kext packages, you'll need to disable SIP first.
It's also worth mentioning that the Kext Drop project has been retired. Even though it still works on the latest OS X versions, don't expect any updates or support from the developers.
If you're looking for alternatives for installing .kext modules that offer more features, check out Kext Utility or Kext Wizard. They might be just what you need!
