Introducing kernbench FOR LINUX

kernbench FOR LINUX

This is a CPU throughput benchmark originally devised and used by Martin J. Bligh. It is designed to compare kernels on the same machine or to compare hardware. To compare hardware, you need to be running machines of the same architecture (e.g., i386) and run kernbench on the same kernel source tree.

Main Features:

  • Runs a kernel at various numbers of concurrent jobs

  • Prints out useful statistics for the average of each group of runs

  • Requires at least 2GB of RAM for accurate benchmarking

  • Ideal to be run in single-user mode on a non-journaled filesystem

  • Need a kernel tree and the applications 'time' and 'awk' installed

  • Simple to use: cd into the kernel tree directory and run the command

Specifications:

  • Price: FREE

  • Publisher: Con Kolivas

  • Number of times to perform benchmark: 5 (default)

  • Number of jobs for optimal run: 4 * CPU (default)

  • Perform single-threaded runs: optional

  • Don't perform half load runs by default

  • Don't perform optimal load runs by default

  • Don't perform maximal load runs by default

  • Fast run option available

  • Print version number option
