KeepingYouAwake is a handy little app for macOS that stops your computer from sleeping when you don’t want it to. If you’ve ever used the Caffeine tool by Lighthead Software, then you’ll get why this app is awesome. Caffeine hasn't been updated in a while and doesn't work well with Retina displays, so KeepingYouAwake steps in to fill that gap.
Once you launch KeepingYouAwake, you'll see a small icon pop up in your status bar. Just click it, and boom! You can keep your Mac awake for as long as you need. If you're looking to set a timer, just right-click on the icon. You can choose to stay awake for 5, 10, or 15 minutes—or even 30 minutes up to 1 or 2 hours!
The cool thing? The status bar icons are designed to look great on Retina displays and also fit nicely with OS X Yosemite's dark mode. So whether you're working late at night or during the day, it looks sharp!
At its core, KeepingYouAwake is just a friendly graphic interface that helps you use the built-in caffeinate command line utility without needing to mess around with Terminal. By the way, this caffeinate tool comes pre-installed with every version of macOS.
One important tip: always keep an eye on how long KeepingYouAwake is running. Make sure to turn it off when you’re done using it so that you save energy and avoid overheating your Mac.
If you're after a simple app that lets you tweak your energy settings quickly and easily—and looks good doing it—then KeepingYouAwake is definitely worth giving a shot!
