What is Kannel WAP and SMS Gateway FOR LINUX?

Kannel WAP and SMS Gateway

Kannel WAP and SMS Gateway is a handy tool that acts as a bridge for both WAP and SMS services. It’s pretty important because SMS, or short message services, are super popular around the globe. Kannel mainly helps connect HTTP-based services to various SMS centers using some less common protocols.

What is WAP?

You might be wondering about WAP, which stands for Wireless Application Protocol. It’s a set of languages and tools designed to help mobile phones access services. Back in the day, most mobile services worked through regular phone calls or simple text messages (like those SMS ones). But let’s be honest; those methods aren't the easiest or most efficient. That’s where WAP steps in! It allows for services that feel more like what we have on the web.

The Reality of WAP

Now, here’s a little reality check: despite what some marketers say, WAP doesn’t just bring all the internet content straight to your phone. There are too many issues that make that tricky. For example, most online content is made up of HTML pages needing fast connections and powerful devices. Phones just can’t keep up with that—they have slower processors, smaller memory, and not-so-great bandwidth.

A New Markup Language

That’s why WAP created its own markup language called Wireless Markup Language (WML). This new language is simpler than HTML and easier for mobile devices to understand. Plus, it introduced WMLScript—a scripting language that all browsers must support—and even its own image format called Wireless Bitmap (WBMP).

Efficiency Matters

HTTP wasn’t cutting it for wireless use either; it's kind of bulky. By switching to a binary and compressed format, it cuts down on overhead from hundreds of bytes per request to just a few bytes! To manage this better, WAP has set up a special gateway between phones and content servers.

The Role of the Gateway

This WAP gateway communicates with your phone using the WAP protocol stack and translates those requests into normal HTTP requests. This means content providers can use any HTTP servers without having to learn something completely new.

Simplifying Content Delivery

Besides making protocol translations easier, this gateway also compresses WML pages into smaller sizes so they take up less space when being sent over the airwaves. This helps save bandwidth and makes life easier for your phone's processor by lightening its load!
