Oracle’s JDK (which stands for Java Development Kit) is packed with a bunch of handy tools. It makes it super easy to develop and test programs, applications, and components using the Java programming language. Plus, these are all designed to run on the Java platform.
The JDK isn't just a one-trick pony! It comes with various utilities and tools that help developers create, debug, execute, and even design documentation for their Java-based programs. If you want a full list of what's included, check out the JDK Tools and Utilities section on Oracle's documentation site.
This package also has a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) built right in. That includes a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), lots of class libraries, and other files that help run Java software smoothly.
The JDK also comes with Oracle's Java DB. This is a special version of the Apache Derby relational database. It's based on SQL and works well with Java programming. And guess what? It includes Derby without changing its original source code! You can find more info on this at the Java DB documentation page.
If you're into native-code programming, you'll love that the JDK contains a bunch of C header files. These support programming using the JVM Tool Interface, Java's Native Interface, and many other cool features of the Java platform.
The best part? The JDK gives you access to source files for all classes in the core API of the Java programming language! This includes sources for java.*, javax.*, and some org.* packages—just not for com.sun.* packages.
