Incremental Backup for Mac

So, let’s talk about Incremental Backup for Mac. If you're using TimeMachine on Leopard, it works pretty well. But if you’re still on Tiger or have two drives that you like to swap out for rotating backups, things can get a bit tricky.

What Does the Incremental Backup Script Do?

This awesome script lets you set up incremental backups from any source to any destination. It’s super handy! Here’s what happens when you run the script:

• It creates a folder named with the date in your backup location.


• The script checks the source directory structure against the last backup version.


• Any new and modified files get copied from the source to your backup location.


• If there are unmodified files, it hard-links them to save space.


• Plus, it logs errors and keeps track of the most current backup folder in text files at your backup spot.

Why Hard-Links Are Awesome!

Thanks to hard-linking, you can delete older folders if you're low on space. In case something goes really wrong (like a catastrophic failure), recovery is super easy! Just take the latest backup folder and copy it over to where you need it.
